This book invites readers into a crucial reversal in the interpretation of Scripture: we do not merely read the Bible; we are also read by it. Moving from the foundations of hermeneutics, the human interpreter, revelation and text, the Torah, historical narrative, poetry and wisdom, to the Prophets, readers are led to recognize that they are never neutral before the Word.
With academic rigor and spiritual sensitivity, the book affirms that faith and rigor are not opposites. Language, history, genre, canon, and tradition must be studied with humility, while the motives, power structures, and ethical fruit of every interpretation are continually tested.
Through four movements—observe, recognize, test, and respond—readers are directed toward an obedience that is concrete, corrective, and growing within community. The book also situates the reading of the Bible within Indonesia's public responsibilities: plurality, justice, the dignity of one's neighbor, vulnerability, and hope.
Ultimately, the aim of this book is not to produce those who are quickest to answer, but people who are most trustworthy when they speak about God: bold because they have listened, gentle because they are aware of their limitations, critical because they love, and hopeful because they believe that God has not finished His work.
